Description
The Government of Canada offers several scholarship programs to support candidates from abroad who wish to conduct research in Canada on a short-term basis.
Canadian institutions will receive funding from Global Affairs Canada, through its legal name, the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) in the form of a non-negotiable contribution agreement and will be responsible for providing the funds to successful students according to its internal processes. Should a student not take up the scholarship, Canadian institutions must return all funds, including the administrative fee, to DFATD.
Eligibility
To apply for this scholarship:
You must have applied (or will apply) to a university or graduate school within Europe (see the FAQs below for an official list of European countries).
You must have applied (or will apply) for a Master's-level degree starting in the Fall semester.
The degree program must be studied either within Europe or online via distance learning from a European institute.
You must meet the entry requirements for the university or graduate school, including:
Holding a valid undergraduate (Bachelor's) degree
Meeting language requirements for the program
You must hold or be eligible to apply for a relevant study visa (if applicable).
You must be studying abroad in a country that you are not a citizen of or currently reside in (unless currently studying abroad).

Application Process
The application consists of:
Filling out a form.
Submitting a short essay (400-500 words) on the question: Why did you choose your study abroad country, and how will it help you grow as a globally-minded leader?
Please note, applications must be submitted in English. Applications in other languages will not be considered.
If selected as a finalist, you may be asked to provide:
Proof of acceptance into the university in the form of a copy of your acceptance letter
Proof of undergraduate qualification in the form of a copy of your transcript
Proof of identity in the form of a copy of your passport
Copies of documents must be color scans. Please have these documents on hand should you be selected as a finalist. You will have 7 days from the time you receive notification of finalist selection to supply us with this documentation.
Supporting Documents
Institutions must ensure documents are complete and accurate as per the instructions. Revised documents will not be accepted after the deadline. Documents in a language other than English or French must be accompanied by a translation.
Proof of citizenship
- A copy of the candidate's passport or national identity card with a photo and valid dates
- Documents not accepted as proof of citizenship are: driver’s license, permanent residence card, work permit, student card, health card, birth certificate or baptismal certificate
- Proof of citizenship selected must be from the same country/territory as the citizenship selected in the online application form
Signed Privacy Notice Statement
- A copy of the Privacy Notice Statement for non-Canadian participants signed by the candidate and dated within the last six months
Letter of proof of full-time enrolment from the home institution
- On official letterhead
- Dated within the last six months
- Confirms that the candidate is currently enrolled in a full-time program
- Copies of transcripts, a student card or a letter of admission are not acceptable
Letter of support from the home institution (maximum one page)
- On official letterhead
- Dated within the last six months
- From the candidate's instructor, professor or international director
- Explains the nature of study or research to be undertaken in Canada and how the candidate and the home institution will benefit from this scholarship program
Scholarship Conditions
Students selected for a scholarship agree to:
- Engage in full-time studies or research as defined by the Canadian institution
- Abstain from clinical training or clinically-oriented research involving direct patient-care
- Return to their home institutions after the scholarship period to complete their studies
Failure to meet these conditions may result in the cancellation of the scholarship.
